The Schmack-daddy and fam coming through the Mont (as in Fremont)
Tim Keller on Psalm 1 is fantastic. Here are his points and then the deep, rich passage:
I. Happiness is possible. The young think happiness is certain unless you do bad then you mess up your life. The old think that happiness is not really possible. Cynics typically can be very rich.
II. Happiness is fundamental not circumstantial. The tree has been planted by God and it’s roots go deep. An evergreen producing fruit in season. Happiness is under you not around you.
III. Happiness is not sought directly. Seek heaven get earth thrown in. Seek earth and lose both. Sermon on mount. God has my past guaranteeing the future plus my present is fully his. If there is any other thing for the present, God in love would give it. He grants whatever is necessary so if not granted, not necessary.
IV. Happiness does not happen to you it is decided. Passage states in verse 3 the righteous does not sit in seat of scoffers. Who do you sing to? Which Piper? Who do you identify with.
Psalm 1
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
