The One Thing to Remember: Jesus is God and he is with us – our proper response is worship not fear
Key Verse: “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him? — Mark 4:41
Intro: All that the Bible says is true – we can believe it!
Mark 4:35On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?”
Key Question: How can we say that Jesus is God?
Four Key Points:
1. Where did creation come from? God created the world and made the waves powerful. Genesis 1 says, “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
2. Jesus speaks a word and the waves stop; He is in control not the powerful, chaotic waves.
3. Therefore, Jesus must be God.
4. How do we respond? Worship! So, if Jesus is God and he is with us like he is with the disciples in the boat, then should we be afraid of the storm? No. Our proper response to Jesus is to worship him; What is worship? Showing that something has worth; What we are saying is that Jesus is worthy and all powerful;
Conclusion:
Tell the story to me.
Tell the story to each other.
The tie to Night 2 and 3 lessons: Get to the cross and the resurrection on Thursday night. Night 2 – Jesus is God because he is more powerful than sickness and disease; Night 3 – we are all bit with the sin problem and there is only one cure – The snake on the stick – Mark teaching from John 3; is there anything magical about the snake? No. It is not voodoo – it is about faith; there is voodoo in other common faiths. Jesus is lifted up but he does not stay there on the cross, he is brought to life again; his resurrection guarantees our resurrection to eternal life with God. Jesus is still on the cross in the artwork and theology of many places of worship.
